Cage shark diving makes diving with extremely large and dangerous shark safe! Cage shark diving is necessary for sharks that pose a serious threat to humans in the water. Great White sharks are the most common species of shark viewed from the inside of a cage. Great Whites pose a massive threat to humans in the water. We've put together some frequently asked questions about cage shark diving below.

  1. Is cage shark diving safe?
    Yes. The cage is there to protect you from the sharks. In most popular shark diving areas there are strict government regulations about when and where cage shark diving operators can dive, the strength and quality of the cage, and who can run cage shark diving tours. Tour operators are experienced shark divers and always put safety first. Shark diving cages are built so there's enough room for you to get a good view of the shark but not enough for the shark to get inside the cage. Sharks rarely attack cages, they're more interested in the food and/or fake seal that's on offer!

  2. Do I need qualifications for cage shark diving?
    No you don't. Because the cage sits on the surface of the water there is no need for a scuba diving certification of any kind. Operators will make sure that you are physically fit before letting you enter the water. Some basic instruction and safety procedures will be taught before entering the cage.

  3. Where can I go cage shark diving?
    Cage shark diving is on offer all over the world. The most popular places for cage shark diving are where the Great Whites are. In South Africa, South Australia and the southern coast of California.

  4. What species of sharks require cages?
    The most common shark viewed from the inside of a cage is the Great White shark. Most other sharks can be viewed in open water dives. However, in some parts of the world some more aggressive are viewed with cages. For example the Bull and Tiger sharks.

  5. How big is the cage?
    The size of the cage used in cage shark diving depends on the operator. The most common cage size is 3m x 1m. The cage is a rectangle shape and can hold up to 4 people at a time. Larger cages are available. Operators will often choose the right cage depending on the conditions and group size.

  6. How long does cage shark diving last?
    Depending on conditions, the average time you will spend in the cage is 20-30 minutes.
